The preparation and production for this project stretched through months throughout the pandemic. As Tokyo 2020 became Tokyo “2021”, Broken Pencil Studios was working hard to create something that would be memorable and act as a representation for the athletes attending the Olympic Games: Erica Wiebe, Danielle Lappage, Amar Dhesi, and Jordie Steen.
One of the most difficult challenges was translating the likeness of the athletes to animation. To effectively capture their features and represent them properly, we explored different styles. We ultimately thought the anime style would be the most suitable - as the 2021 Olympics would be held in Tokyo, Japan, the birthplace of anime and manga.
In July of 2021, CBC News interviewed Broken Pencil Studios' Guillermo Chan (Founder and Chief Creative Officer) on the animated video we created for Canada's Wrestling Team for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics!
